ABSTRACT:
We are team Airec (AIREC), which is an acronym for “Advancing Intelligent Renewable Energy Communities.” Our project will help communities make better infrastructure and city planning decisions during the transition from our dependence on fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. Our project aims to make it simpler for communities and cities to make the move towards renewable energy through the insights gained from big data. We plan on analyzing sources of data collected by the U.S. government & elsewhere to determine useful statistics on energy usage and costs in U.S. communities. This data will be used to gain insight on energy needs, allowing us to develop tailored proposals for helping communities transition towards renewable energy. This project will directly affect our community in Columbia, MO, which currently uses a large coal plant to power our University. This project also has the potential to affect the United States and our ecosystem as a whole by reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and their associated byproducts. Greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels are driving the crisis of climate change; our project wishes to make renewable energy more accessible to communities across the globe by evaluating a community’s energy needs through big data. This information will help create a system that can be used to develop detailed proposals for meeting a community’s current and future energy needs through renewable energy sources.
Goals for Sprint 0 (October) :
- Secure Project Funding
- Select large datasets on U.S. Energy Usage/Costs and prepare them for entry on HDFS (Hadoop Distributed File System)
- Setup & Configure Instances for Project Environment (Hadoop, Pig, Hive, HBASE) on Ubuntu Server(s)
- Purchase computers for in-house processing of energy datasets.
- Continue Development of Airec Team Website
- Have Fun!
